Ethel Ashton was an integral facet of the Philadelphia art community. Born in Philadelphia, Ashton Studied at the Moore Institute of Art and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, exhibited frequently in Philadelphia and was a member of several vital Philadelphia Art Associations. With this complete immersion in our local culture, it should come as no surprise that many of her paintings were genre scenes of the everyday, Philadelphia sort. Including Park views, street scenes, people doing typical, everyday activities. Her ability to capture the implicit beauty in the mundane set Ethel Ashton apart. She was awarded several deserved prizes over the years.
